Book clubs are a fun and relaxing way to engage individuals in reading sessions. Book clubs help make reading a social practice and allow for students to get together to read, relax and share their thoughts. This informal setting makes reading a fun activity and creates a community of readers.

As the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) draws nearer, the AIFA Reading Society organised its maiden edition of the AIFA Book Club at Okesuna Senior High School, Lagos Island.  On Thursday, March 28, 2019, the AIFA Book Club was held with students of Okesuna Senior High School to read and review the literary text “She Stoops to Conquer” by Oliver Goldsmith. The text is one of the recommended literature texts for Senior Secondary Schools in West Africa for the preparation of the forthcoming examination. The text “She Stoops to Conquer” is a dramatic comedy which uses farce and satire to ridicule a specific segment of the society, its perception of the eighteen-century Englishman’s manners (way of life, social custom), in this case ‘the upper class’.

The Society’s representative Ms. Magdaline Oyoroh sensitised the students on the objectives of AIFA Book Club. The session was very interactive and educative. Two (2) students in S.S.S 3, Bunmi and Jibola took turns in summarising the book which served as an introduction into the main discussion where suggested pages reflecting central themes, characters and literary devices used in the book were read, reviewed, analysed, and critiqued.

The Society hopes that establishing book clubs in schools will aid in grooming young book reviewers in Okesuna Senior High School with great interpretative and critique skills. The principal, Mrs. A. Ajikobi and a teacher, Mr. Adegoke thanked the Society for its profound effort towards ensuring students’ readiness and participation in school activities and learning in general. The principal also mentioned that the book club would help the students in preparing for their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) with specific focus on Literature in English amongst others.

The students selected “Othello” by William Shakespeare as the next book to be read. The book was selected as it was yet to be reviewed by the students owing to the fact that the school currently does not have a Literature in English teacher. The students thanked the Society and hope that more book reading sessions is organised as it would help them excel in this subject during their forthcoming examination in April 2019.
