AIFA Mini Story Series: Session 3 What Type Of Reader Are You?

Please Share

A book club is a place that accommodates all kind of readers, providing them the opportunity to explore various genres of literature. To this end, participants of the AIFA Mini Story Series met on Saturday, May, 2nd, 2020 to read and discuss the short story Maserumo, authored by Resoketswe ManezheIt. The piece, Maserumo, bares the themes of superstition, fear, death, gender bias and conflict of opinions.

While some described the story as less engaging, others found its themes exciting.

Deborah Olajitan: “I think the myths were how the characters gave reason to the  deaths. Even now, it’s difficult to explain how hearing a seemingly unharmful sound could lead to death.

No, at least not entirely. While some superstitions may hold some amount of ancient wisdom, most of them were our forefathers’ way of coping with events they couldn’t explain otherwise.”

Olufemi Odeyale: “As Africans that we are, we must admit that superstition is part of our reality. We all have it.”

Chinyere Akachukwu: “I thought it was an interesting story which started off as some sort of sad drama and quickly ended on a very eerie/thriller note. I think the story causes the reader to really consider the possibilities of supernatural events. I find that when people can’t explain an otherwise ordinary event they categorize it as “supernatural”, almost instantly.”

These divergent opinions reflect the essence of the AIFA Book Club: to encourage and build readers interest in various book genres. At the AIFA Book Club, every story counts and every opinion is treasured.
