On Monday, May 30, 2022, AIFA Reading Society visited St. Matthias Girls Nursery and Primary School, Lagos Island, Lagos to celebrate Children’s Day which is annually celebrated on May 27 in Nigeria.  Given AIFA’s commitment to the education of the Nigerian child and the theme for this year’s celebration, “A Better Future for Every Child”. The Society had a series of activities that promote learning for the students.

To celebrate 2022 Children’s Day, the Society hosted two children’s authors, Ms. Maero Ozako, author of “Fables for Children” and Mrs. Ugo Anidi, author of “Half Hour Hara”, who both read their stories to the children. During the reading session, the authors engaged the children with questions and new words from the books while testing their comprehension and listening skills.

After the book reading sessions, Ms. Ozako led an arts and crafts session with the children where she guided the children to write colourful words of affirmation aimed at building their self-esteem. There was also an opportunity for the students to role-play a scene and prizes were won by the students.

Ms. Joy Lawal from AIFA Reading Society, spoke to the children about their role in building a better future for themselves. She emphasised the need for them to read, listen and participate actively in their school activities.

At the end of the event, the Society donated over 250 copies of books which included textbooks, children’s story books and educational toys to the School. The Head Teacher, Mrs. Chinwe Okoye extended her appreciation to the sponsors of the event and the Society.

The 2022 Children’s Day event was sponsored by donations received in celebration of the birthday of Ms. Joy Lawal. We thank the following people for their donations.
