On Wednesday, March 8, 2023, the Society hosted the first book club session for beneficiaries of Slum2School Africa at Tarkwa Bay Island. The Society had partnered with Slum2school Africa to promote reading among its beneficiaries and on seeing the impact of our book club sessions on its beneficiaries at its Makoko community, the management of Slum2school Africa requested an extension of our book club to their beneficiaries at Tarkwa Bay Island.

Thus, this session held at Tarkwa Bay, an open community on the Atlantic Ocean, having a total of 30 senior secondary students in attendance. The students discussed Chinua Achebe’s short story, “Dead Men’s Path,” exploring the themes inherent in the story.

Icebreakers were used to begin the session, which the students thoroughly enjoyed; after that, they discussed the story’s lessons. Their lessons included respecting people’s feelings, collaborating with designated authorities rather than ignoring them, and not forcing change on people.

In the end, the students were excited to be a part of the book club and pledged to devote more time to reading. In addition, they look forward to exciting AIFA Book Club sessions.
