On Wednesday, April 12, 2023, we held the first book club session for the year with PAU Book Club Members. This time, the club members discussed “Seeking Celestial Lights” written by one of the club members, Oreshade Abolore.

Seeking Celestial Lights is a story that explored the character of a female college student that battled with mental illness and the stigmas that came alongside the illness. Amongst many lessons highlighted by the story, the club members reached a conclusion that mental health should be prioritized. They also argued against solely relying on religion to treat mental health issues, but to rather employing the services of specialists charged with that responsibility.

On Wednesday, May 17, 2023, another book club was held in collaboration with AIFA Book Club and the club members discussed Oyinkan Braithwaite’s debut novel, “My Sister, The Serial Killer.”

The book revolves around two sisters, Ayoola and Korede, and their complex relationship in Lagos, Nigeria. Ayoola is a stunning young woman who is notorious for killing her lovers and Korede is a nurse who always covers up Ayoola’s crimes. The novel explores the dynamics of their relationship, the secrets they keep, and the consequences of their actions.

While the book club members examined the themes in the book, some were not satisfied with the way the book ended. Some of the book club members took a step further to paint different ending to the book. Some stated that Korede will continue to be an accomplice to Ayoola’s crimes as she won’t want to risk facing the law if their crimes were uncovered.  Others stated that Korede’s loyalty to her sister may wear off eventually and the truth will be exposed.

AIFA Book Club in Collaboration with Pan Atlantic University Book Club aims to foster a reading culture among students of tertiary institutions.
