On September 8, 2023, AIFA Reading Society enthusiastically joined the global community in commemorating International Literacy Day. Our commitment to fostering literacy in Nigeria was exemplified through a series of engaging activities designed to raise awareness about the pivotal role of literacy in sustainable development.

International Literacy Day, observed annually on September 8th, transcends borders and cultures as it underscores the profound significance of literacy in our lives and communities. This day serves as a powerful reminder that literacy is not merely the ability to read and write; rather, it constitutes a fundamental instrument that empowers individuals and catalyzes progress worldwide. It beckons us to acknowledge the transformative potential of literacy and to reaffirm our dedication to promoting education and literacy for all, as we collectively strive to construct a more equitable, informed, and interconnected world.

As a nonprofit organisation steadfastly devoted to advancing literacy in our society, AIFA Reading Society is well-versed in the profound import of literacy. Our commemorative activities commenced with a visit to Inspiration 92.3FM, where we featured on the “On-Air Book Club.” Ms. Yetunde Daramola and Ms. Ijeoma Ezenwere, esteemed representatives of our Society, engaged in a thoughtful discourse on the essence of literacy with the station’s listeners. They passionately encouraged individuals to incorporate reading into their daily lives, even if it means dedicating a moment to read just a page, a paragraph, or a chapter each day. They underscored that refraining from reading when one has the capability to do so is akin to foregoing the ability to read altogether.

During this enlightening session, AIFA Reading Society proffered solutions to the challenges emanating from the nation’s neglect of its educational sector. We fervently called upon all stakeholders to prioritize education and learning on all fronts, thereby nurturing value-driven individuals who can contribute positively to society.

Following the radio appearance, our team proceeded to St. Matthias for a read-aloud session. We had the privilege of engaging young minds with the book “Mma Powered” by Chinyere Evelyn Ifediora. The pupils, their eyes shining with curiosity, absorbed every nuance of the story, captivated by the vivid storytelling and illustrations brought to life by Ms. Kafayat Lawal.

Additionally, the President of AIFA Reading Society, Professor Enase Okonedo, who also serves as the Vice Chancellor of Pan Atlantic University, took center stage on Television Continental News to contribute to this year’s International Literacy Day discourse. In her enlightening interview, Professor Okonedo emphasised the critical importance of literacy by highlighting the sobering reality that many individuals still lag behind in acquiring basic literacy skills.

She called upon all segments of society, from government bodies to nonprofit organisations like AIFA Reading Society, to unite in a concerted effort to combat the detrimental effects of illiteracy. This collaborative approach, she stressed, is the key to igniting positive change and uplifting our society through the power of literacy.

In summary, the Society’s participation in International Literacy Day 2023 was a testament to our unwavering commitment to the cause of literacy. Through engaging discussions, inspiring reading sessions, and thoughtful contributions to the public discourse, we reaffirmed our dedication to fostering a more literate and enlightened society, where every individual has the opportunity to unlock their potential through the gift of literacy.
