On Saturday, June 29, 2024, two of AIFA Reading Society’s esteemed board directors, Mrs. Ngozi Kunuji and Mrs. Rhoda Odigboh, brought together a close-knit group of friends for an engaging and insightful book club session at Lakeshore Cancer Center, Ikeja G.R.A, Lagos. The event centered on Seun Lari-Williams’ thought-provoking poetry collection, “A Little Violence,” sparking deep discussions on the book’s complex themes, which include resilience, struggle, and the human experience in modern-day Nigeria.
The atmosphere was both lively and reflective, as participants exchanged interpretations of the poems, drawing from their personal experiences and insights. The poetry’s exploration of societal issues, human relationships, and the subtle nuances of violence in everyday life led to a rich, multifaceted conversation. The session allowed everyone to not only appreciate the artistry of Seun Lari-Williams but also to reflect on broader social themes relevant to the Nigerian experience.
In addition to the literary exploration, the event also focused on health awareness, adding a meaningful layer to the gathering. Nurses from Lakeshore Cancer Center delivered an informative and eye-opening talk on the importance of cancer examinations, emphasizing early detection and the role of regular screenings in preventing and managing cancer. The practical advice and detailed information provided by the nurses resonated with the attendees, many of whom expressed newfound awareness of their own health.
This book club session provided a rare blend of intellectual and personal growth, pairing the enrichment of literature with essential health education. By combining these two powerful elements, the event left a lasting impact on all attendees, offering both inspiration from the world of poetry and valuable knowledge about health and well-being.
It was a memorable occasion that demonstrated AIFA Reading Society’s commitment to fostering intellectual curiosity and awareness in all aspects of life.
