On Saturday, September 28, 2024, AIFA Reading Society held a special book club session, hosted by our Board Director, Dr. Peter Bamkole, at Fresh County in Victoria Island. The gathering brought together Dr. Bamkole’s friends and fellow book lovers for a morning of meaningful discussions on selected poems from ‘A Little Violence’ by Seun Lari-Williams.
The poems explored themes like love, life, and the challenges of living in Nigeria. Seun Lari-Williams’ writing, filled with raw emotion and vivid imagery, sparked deep conversations among the group. Poems like “When it Rains in Lagos, “Love has been Lazy,” and “How to Greet My People” particularly stood out, leading to reflections on urban life, nature, and the complexity of relationships. The group also touched on how these themes resonate with personal experiences and the broader realities of life in Nigeria today.
The discussions were lively, with everyone sharing their thoughts and perspectives. One attendee, by name, Victor James, made an impactful point during the discussion on Love has been Lazy, saying that he gets frustrated when people stay silent in the face of injustice. He emphasized that love should be loud, intense, and visible to all.
Dr. Bamkole’s warm and welcoming hosting made everyone feel comfortable, allowing for open and deep conversations. It was a great example of how literature can bring people together, spark emotions, and create a sense of community among readers.
To capture the day’s highlights, we took several photos, which will be shared with the participants so they can relive the experience and share it with their networks.
At AIFA Reading Society, we are committed to promoting a culture of reading and creating spaces where people can come together to discuss literature and share ideas. This book club session is part of our efforts to encourage reading and spark positive change through books.
As we look forward to more book club sessions and literary events, we want to thank Dr. Peter Bamkole for hosting and all the attendees for their active participation.
