In February 2024, AIFA Reading Society embarked on a transformative project to establish a modern, fully equipped library at Hope Fountain School for the Deaf in Lagos. This initiative, made possible through a generous grant from the Ford Foundation, was designed to promote literacy, educational access, and inclusivity for the students at Hope Fountain school.
Over eight months, the AIFA team worked in close collaboration with the school to design and execute the library project, which officially launched on October 25, 2024. The goal was to create a space that fosters learning, encourages reading, and provides students with digital resources to support their education.
The library underwent a comprehensive transformation, ensuring it became a vibrant and conducive learning environment. Key enhancements included:
- Structural Improvements: Painting, roofing, artistic wall designs, and electrical installations to create a welcoming atmosphere.
- Customized Furnishings: Thoughtfully designed shelving and furniture tailored to the needs of the students.
- Technology Integration: Installation of four laptops and two desktop computers to provide access to digital learning resources.
- Diverse Educational Resources: Stocking the library with a rich collection of books, including dictionaries, encyclopedias, fiction, and nonfiction titles, catering to various reading levels and interests.
A Celebration of Literacy and Inclusion
The library’s launch event brought together students, parents, educators, and community members to celebrate this milestone. Distinguished guests, including AIFA’s President, Professor Enase Okonedo, and the Ford Foundation’s Program Manager, Ms. Joy Ehinor-Esezobor, delivered inspiring keynote addresses. The event highlighted the importance of literacy, digital inclusion, and the power of collaborative efforts in shaping the future of education for deaf students.

A Lasting Impact
The Hope Fountain School for the Deaf library is expected to play a vital role in improving students’ literacy skills, academic performance, and digital literacy. It will also serve as a hub for community engagement, providing a valuable resource for the local deaf community.
AIFA Reading Society remains committed to fostering literacy and educational access, and we extend our deepest gratitude to the Ford Foundation and all our partners who made this project a reality. We look forward to seeing the library create lasting benefits for future generations, empowering students with the knowledge and tools they need to succeed.
