On Wednesday, March 5, 2025, AIFA Reading Society held an inspiring book club session at Lafiaji Junior Secondary School, Lagos—bringing together enthusiastic students eager to learn and grow through the power of literature. These sessions are a key part of our mission to promote reading culture in Nigerian schools and nurture values that help shape young minds.

The day began with lively icebreakers to ease the students into a relaxed and welcoming environment. The laughter and excitement that filled the room helped set the tone for an engaging and interactive literary experience.

Ms. Ijeoma Ezenwere, Program Coordinator at AIFA Reading Society, welcomed the students and introduced the short story of the day—”The Day Jide Became a Leader.” Two students volunteered to read the story aloud while their peers followed along attentively. As the story unfolded, the room buzzed with curiosity and anticipation.

The reading led to a vibrant group discussion, where students reflected on the main character, Jide—a boy who doubted his leadership skills until faced with a challenging situation that revealed his true potential. Many students admitted that they too often struggle with self-doubt, making Jide’s transformation especially relatable and inspiring.

The conversation expanded to highlight Aisha, a supportive friend in the story, and her role in helping Jide believe in himself. This prompted deeper reflections on the importance of encouragement, friendship, and emotional intelligence in discovering one’s strengths.

Together, the students identified key leadership traits such as courage, empathy, responsibility, and teamwork—recognizing that youth leadership development doesn’t always come with titles or positions. Instead, it starts with a mindset to serve, act responsibly, and create positive change in their immediate environments.

The session was a powerful example of how literacy programs in secondary schools can be used not only to build reading comprehension but also to empower students with life skills. The students of Lafiaji Junior Secondary School left the session with renewed confidence and a broader understanding of leadership.

At AIFA Reading Society, we remain dedicated to using book clubs in Lagos and across Nigeria to spark curiosity, build character, and equip the next generation with tools for lifelong learning and impactful living.
