On Friday, February 23, 2024, AIFA Reading Society hosted its AIFA Teachers’ Symposium in Nsukka, Enugu State, Nigeria, at St. Teresa’s College. Themed “Inspire, Engage, Transform: The Teachers’ Journey,” the symposium attracted educators from public primary and secondary schools, along with notable figures from the education sector and professionals from various industries. Additionally, the event honored Mrs. Caroline N. Ajogwu’s 70th birthday, commemorating her career journey as an Educator and her esteemed role as the Lead Volunteer for AIFA Reading Society in the Southeast region of Nigeria.
Purpose of the Teachers Symposium
Recognising the crucial role educators play in shaping young minds, the AIFA Reading Society embarked on a mission to fill the gap in professional development within the teaching profession. With a commitment to fostering literacy and a love for reading in Nigeria, the Teachers’ Conference was conceived to equip educators with the essential tools and knowledge needed to enhance their teaching practices. This initiative aimed to not only empower teachers but also amplify their impact on students, thereby aligning with the core objectives of AIFA Reading Society.
Keynote Address
In his opening remarks, Professor Fabian Ajogwu, OFR, SAN, Director, AIFA Reading Society and Chairman of the Board at Kenna Partners, emphasized the significance of teachers in national development. He expressed gratitude to the teachers for their participation, acknowledging the transformative potential of the event in building their capacity. Professor Ajogwu also underscored the societal impact of the AIFA Reading Society, particularly in rural areas where educational empowerment is paramount.
The facilitators – Professor Theresa Oforka, of the Department of Educational Foundations, Faculty of Education, University of Nigeria, Nsukka and Dr. Franscisca Okeke, of the Department of Educational Foundations, Faculty of Education, University of Nigeria, Nsukka facilitated two sessions. Professor Oforka spoke on The Role of Professional Development in Teacher Transformation and encouraged the teachers to embrace a growth mindset and thereby improve on their abilities and skills through effort, practice and learning. She further charged them to see challenges as opportunities to grow, rather than as threats or failures.
Additionally, Dr. Franscisca Okeke, spoke on nurturing Creativity and Critical Thinking in the Classroom and used the platform to charge the educators, policymakers, and society to work together to foster an environment that nurtures and values creativity in learners of all ages. She emphasized that prioritizing creativity in education, will empower individuals to adapt, innovate, and thrive in an ever-evolving world. She also emphasized that nurturing creative critical thinking skills, individuals can unlock their full innovative potentials as creative critical thinkers possess the ability to transcend conventional boundaries, change assumptions, and generate original insights.
The Unveiling of Nwanapa on the Teacher’s Purpose
The symposium also featured the unveiling of Mrs. CN Ajogwu’s book, “NWANAPA on the Teachers’ Purpose.” This publication not only chronicled the celebrant’s journey in the teaching profession but also served as an inspirational tool for fellow educators. Mrs. Caroline N. Ajogwu has been the driving force behind AIFA Reading Society’s initiatives in the Southeast, serving as the Lead Volunteer. Her unwavering dedication and wholehearted backing of the Society’s mission have led to tangible benefits for communities in the region. Thanks to her efforts, AIFA’s book donations, essay competitions, and support for STEM students have made a significant impact in the Southeast.
