Over the summer holiday in August 2024, AIFA Reading Society partnered with New Seed Foundation, a non profit organisation bridging educational gaps, to organize engaging book club sessions as part of the foundation’s Holiday Lesson program for students in the Mushin area. This collaboration aligns with AIFA’s mission to promote a reading culture among secondary school students across Nigeria.

The book club focused on Junior Secondary School (JSS3) students, aiming to instill a passion for reading and foster moral development. During the sessions, the students read and discussed two storybooks, each teaching valuable life lessons on character, hard work, and resilience.

The first two sessions introduced the students to “The Great Wrestler,” a story about Okolo, whose rise to fame through wrestling in his village eventually led to arrogance, costing him his good name. The students explored the themes of humility and the consequences of pride.

In the final session, the students delved into “Ayakata, the Crippled Man,” which tells the story of a beggar who, after years of suffering, found healing through an elderly clergyman. The discussions that followed highlighted themes of hope, transformation, and the power of faith.

The students enthusiastically participated in the discussions, connecting with the characters and drawing important lessons from both stories. One key highlight of the program was how much the students looked forward to the sessions. By the end of the holiday, they resolved to continue their reading habits, which had been nurtured throughout the course.

To support this newfound passion for reading, AIFA Reading Society donated copies of the storybooks to the New Seed Foundation, ensuring that the students could continue engaging with the material. Additionally, AIFA reading Society gifted fifty (50) lunch bags to the JSS3 students during the prize-giving and closing ceremony, as a token of appreciation for their active participation.

AIFA Reading Society is committed to fostering lifelong learning and looks forward to continuing these impactful collaborations.
