In celebration of International Girls in ICT Day 2025, AIFA Reading Society, in partnership with Kenna, hosted an inspiring outreach event on April 30, 2025, at Victoria Island Secondary School, Lagos. The atmosphere was filled with excitement as young girls gathered for half of the day dedicated to learning, inspiration, and empowerment in the world of science and technology.
Although the global observance took place on April 24, AIFA extended the spirit of the celebration by creating an opportunity for students to experience the message firsthand. The focus was clear: to increase awareness about the importance of digital skills for girls and to spark interest in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) as a pathway to meaningful careers.
One of the most memorable highlights of the day was Kenna’s generous donation of six laptops to the school’s computer laboratory. Presented by Ms. Funmilayo Adeshina and warmly received by the school principal, the laptops symbolized more than just new equipment—they represented access, opportunity, and a stronger foundation for ICT learning. The principal expressed deep gratitude, noting how transformative the donation would be for students who often face limited access to digital resources.
The outreach brought together thirty girls from the senior school’s science classes, each eager to learn more about the opportunities that lie within ICT. The heart of the event was the chance to engage directly with accomplished female professionals in the tech space. These women—Ms. Motunrayo Ayo-Akwe from TEKnowledge, Ms. Joy Alumonah from Moneda, and Ms. Chidera Ezenwanne from Kenna—shared their personal journeys, professional experiences, and words of encouragement. Their stories painted a vivid picture of what is possible when girls are bold enough to pursue their dreams in science and technology.

The event was not just about listening but also about building confidence. In an interactive session, the girls were invited to participate in spontaneous presentations. Topics were drawn by ballot, ensuring no one had the chance to prepare beforehand. What followed was a lively display of courage, creativity, and quick thinking. The top three presenters were rewarded with gift packs containing a book, a mathematical set, and a calculator—small but meaningful incentives that encouraged them to keep pursuing academic excellence.
By the end of the day, the students left with more than just knowledge; they carried with them renewed confidence, bigger dreams, and a stronger belief in their ability to succeed in ICT. The event embodied AIFA Reading Society’s ongoing commitment to nurturing future-ready girls through education, exposure, and empowerment.

Partnering with Kenna on this initiative demonstrated the power of collaboration in bridging the gap between young women and the opportunities available in the tech space. As the digital world continues to evolve, giving girls the tools and encouragement they need is not just about preparing them for the future, it’s about ensuring they are active shapers of it.
